Restocked my nutrition supplies for riding today…finally.  I bought a couple of new products I haven’t tried yet and finding good gluten-free energy bars is a real pain, so I’m looking forward to trying them.  Ever since I had to stop eating Clif bars, which I’m still bummed about, I’ve noticed that my body reacts to gels, blocks, etc. better until a certain period, versus eating bars right away.  Generally around the 2.5-3hr mark I will pop an energy bar and prior to that, starting around the 1hr mark (assuming it’s going to be a ride of at least 2.5 hours) I will eat a gel or block.  After 3 hours, I alternate bars and gels (pure carbohydrates vs. a mix of protein/carbs/small amount of fat [in bars that have nuts, for example]).  Of course, rides lasting over 4.5 hours generally result in a stop at a gas station for a quick fix, usually in my case, of sodium.
Current Products I’m Using:
 Larabar
Kind
Zing
Clif Shot Blocks
Clif Gel Shots
Hammer Nutrition Gel
FRS Drink Supplement
Pop-upView Separately

Hi!

I started this blog as a way to talk about nutrition; specifically, alternative foods and cooking because of food intolerances that I have.  I cannot have gluten or dairy and I recently started eating meat again after seven years of being vegetarian and part of that time was spent vegan due to the lactose-intolerance.

Food has always been very important to me and I’ve always been conscious of health without compromising my love for food.  I love cooking and baking and especially after I became gluten-free, it has offered a new found challenge that I am learning to appreciate a bit more than I did initially (sometimes I just want cookies that don’t require 2394 flours and have a weird aftertaste…).

While I was always athletic, cycling has become the sport in which I find nutrition to be crucial before, after, and during a ride…as well as any time off the bike.  Although, it is a double-edged sword.  I’ve always been completely neurotic about food and exercise.  I have awful self-image problems and thankfully its never manifested to anything more than sheer obsession, it still sucks.

I’m hoping that with having a community of people who are interested in fitness and nutrition, I can start to feel more comfortable with my own choices and decisions.  I feel as though I can tell people most things they need to know about food and exercise, yet, I cannot give myself the same encouragement.

So, I’d love to check out more nutrition blogs and fitness blogs (I know there is a huge community of “fitspo” or whatever its’ called-I’m not sure how I feel about those yet, because it definitely aids with the neurosis I’m trying to avoid…but if you’re all about good, whole foods and preferably endurance sports…I’m into that!

Let’s do this thing.

Cyclist: road, mountain, cyclocross, touring...I love it all.
Holistic nutrition: gluten-free, dairy-free, whole foods.

Looking at food and fitness from a positive perspective in attempts to help others further their understanding of all the above and answer any questions. And hopefully in turn, helping out my compulsive nature.
